SAN ANTONIO – The Alamo City turned into a winter wonderland on Monday after the highways and city streets were covered by snow and ice at night.
With so rare snow in our area, some can enjoy the frost. Others who had to maneuver vehicles with ice on roads were not so amused.
“I just moved here, like I did two months ago,” said Gabriela Yambo, who moved from North Carolina. “I grew up in Connecticut and we really get like the snow every week.”
Yambo thought she had finally escaped from the snow. However, on Sunday night, the slippery roads intensified as 3.7 inches of snow fell, leaving many of the roads in San Antonio impassable.
Of the many wrecks, a KSAT crew saw a pile of multiple vehicles on a ramp on US 90 near Highway 151 on the West Side, in which at least one trailer was clipped with a knife.

“We currently have crews trying to reach the major highways in Bexar County,” said Laura Lopez, a TxDOT spokesperson.
Lopez said some 40 trucks sprayed brine and squatters on the highway after plowing Monday.
This unusual winter storm turned out to have a greater impact than people expected.
“I guess this hasn’t happened often, so hopefully it won’t happen again,” said Yambo.
By mid-afternoon Monday, much of the snow and ice on city streets had melted into melting snow and even water, but now that road conditions are still uncertain, TxDOT says it is uncertain when all state highways will reopen to go.
The City of San Antonio sent KSAT the following statement:
“Public Works keeps an eye on the roads for the rare winter conditions and snow accumulation. Crews assist SAPD by placing barricades on city-maintained bridges and overpasses to prevent drivers from crossing dangerous roads.

As the snow begins to melt, Public Works crews will continue to spread a gravel material that aids in the vehicle’s traction. There are some malfunctioning traffic lights due to rolling power outages and we urge residents to avoid driving if possible. “
Bexar County officials have announced that the county’s facilities will be closed and court proceedings will be canceled on Tuesday.
