When Gina Carano hit send on a social media post to compare the Republicans living in the current American political climate during the Holocaust to the Jews, she never expected a backlash leading to her resignation from “The Mandalorian.”
Or so she says.
Carano, 38, was fired from her starring role as Cara Dune on the wildly popular Disney + series last week after the hashtag #FireGinaCarano was trending worldwide. That alone, she said, caught her off guard before she was eventually dumped by Lucasfilm, which produces the ‘Star Wars’ franchise.
“I was in great shock and confusion when certain people said it was anti-Semitic,” Carano said in a written message to former New York Times columnist Bari Weiss. “When I went to remove it, I noticed that the image was not the same as the image people were referring to. I was genuinely confused: should I remove it or leave it? I still don’t know the answer to that question because removing it will only make the crowd attack you more. “
Carano deleted the post, which contained a black-and-white photo of an apparently beaten woman fleeing attackers on the street, along with a written message without quotes, accompanied by an emoji with a sad face:
Jews were beaten in the street, not by Nazi soldiers, but by their Negroes… even by children.
Carano also put the following words in quotation marks:
“Because history is being edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply because they were Jews. How is it different from hating someone because of their political views? “
In a message to Weiss, Carano explained her intention.
“The image to me was a statement that people should stand and get up together, stop being so manipulated by the powers that believe they know what is best for you, and play games with our lives,” said Carano . “My heart has only had the ultimate respect and love for the Jewish community.”
Carano, who rose to fame last year for spreading baseless conspiracy theories, opened the curtain by revealing that ‘The Mandalorian’ executives wanted her to ‘use their exact wording for an apology over the use of pronouns’ after she Twitter -bio had briefly updated to read “beep / bop / boop” as a way of mocking people’s personal preferences. In the end, Carano said she found out she was fired from the show like everyone else – on social media.
She has since signed on to produce and star in a new film project supported by the conservative website The Daily Wire.
