TxDOT is urging people to stay off the road due to dangerous icy conditions in the San Antonio area; The streets of New Braunfels are impassable

SAN ANTONIO – Texas Department of Transportation officials are urging people to stay off roads Wednesday morning after freezing rain has led to a layer of ice in the San Antonio area.

TxDOT reported that dangerous icy conditions are present throughout the region.

The National Weather Service reported that from 2 a.m., the sleet and sleet had become the worst of all the winter events of the past week.

Ice buildups were expected to be somewhere between 1/4 to 3/4 inch along / north of I-10, likely causing major power outages and tree damage.

New Braunfels officials reported that from 3:30 a.m., all streets and bridges should be considered impassable until further notice.

Officials said all streets (city and state) are covered with one to five inches of ice and are untreatable, and rescuers may not be able to reach drivers if they need assistance.

Some of the snow that fell on Sunday evening has partially melted but has frozen again.

San Antonio is expected to experience several days of icy roads, which may include freezing rain.

TxDOT added that drivers should not drive around or move the barricades.
