Tony Finau receives a surprise call from Tom Brady of Tampa Bay Buccaneers during Masters rain delay

AUGUSTA, Georgia – Tony Finau got quite a surprise during Saturday’s lengthy weather delay in the third round of the Masters tournament.

While Finau waited for the rain to stop, he hung out at the Augusta National Golf Club’s caddy house. Jimmy Dunne, a member of the club, gave Finau his cell phone.

Tom Brady, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback, a seven-time Super Bowl champion, was on the phone on FaceTime.

“That was a pleasant surprise,” said Finau. He said, ‘Great play,’ and he followed. He was surprised we quit. He said in the NFL you don’t quit when it rains. “But he said,” No, that’s not the case. “We had a good laugh.”

Finau said he had met Brady once before in 2017, when Brady was still playing for the New England Patriots. Finau said he grew up as a Dallas Cowboys fan, but now mostly applauds individual NFL players.

Finau didn’t say if Brady gave him a pep talk during the weather delay, which lasted more than an hour.

He shot 1-over 73 in the third round and is 8 shots behind leader Hideki Matsuyama starting on Sunday.
