The City of San Antonio is issuing a warning message for the availability of the COVID-19 vaccine

SAN ANTONIO – The City of San Antonio has partnered with some of Bexar County’s vaccine distribution sites to establish a vaccine availability alert system to keep the community informed of the release of COVID-19 vaccines.

Residents who want to receive updates on the availability of COVID-19 vaccinations can now sign up to receive text notifications directly to their mobile phone.

With more providers and pharmacies being assigned vaccines from the Texas Department of State Health Services, the city wanted to create a tool that would alert the public when COVID-19 vaccine appointments are available.

The City of San Antonio will work with local vaccination sites that are open to the public and will send a text message to reach even those without Internet access. The health workers at Metro Health, partner agencies and 311 will continue to sign up residents who do not have cell phones or internet access.

Residents who decide to sign up can send text messages VACCINE up to 55000 or in Spanish VACUNA up to 55000 starting Wednesday. By registering, residents receive an SMS stating which locations have available appointments. If you sign up for this SMS alert system, you will not be signed up for a vaccine and you will not be placed on a waiting list. This is an additional method to inform the community when new appointments are available.

As of March 2020, the City of San Antonio had approximately 1,500 subscribers to the text message alert program. During the pandemic, the service has been promoted through more avenues, including nighttime briefings with Mayor Ron Nirenberg and Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff. More than 40,000 subscribers now use the service to receive city news and information.
