San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said police would like to be proactive in closing highways on Sunday evening to prevent crashes from piling up as more freezing rain is expected Sunday afternoon and evening.

McManus gave a briefing on road conditions in San Antonio and said he had no “good news” about the predicted freezing temperatures.

“(Conditions) are already very bad,” said McManus.

While McManus said the plan to shut off sections of the highway was “not final,” he said his talks with city and TxDOT officials centered around that plan.

“We don’t want the barometer of how safe it is out there … depends on how many people start to crash,” McManus said. “We want to close roads, highways or at least parts of them before that starts.”

The police chief confirmed what other government officials have told residents in the midst of this weather – don’t drive unless it’s an emergency. The department has already received more than 800 calls for traffic incidents, McManus said, and dispatchers have been flooded.

The closures will start on the north side and continue south as the weather progresses, McManus said.

Freezing temperatures have resulted in the closure of almost every junction and viaduct. Conditions could get worse if more sleet and even snow is projected this afternoon.

Police officer Travis Gossett was hospitalized in critical condition in San Antonio after being hit by a car in a crash on Highway 281 and Brook Hollow.

“I don’t want to anticipate what the prognosis will be, but he’s not doing well,” said McManus. “The point here is that we have to stay off the roads to stay safe.”

Police believe the icy conditions, coupled with the failure to control the speed, led to the tragic incident.
