Reported COVID-19 deaths in Iowa soar to over 4,900

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – The number of people who have died as a result of the new coronavirus in Iowa showed a big change since Saturday morning in the latest report from state officials.

At 10:30 a.m. Sunday, the Iowa Department of Public Health said an additional 250 people who have died from COVID-19 have been added to the state total, which now stands at 4,901 since the start of the pandemic. This is the highest number of deaths added in a 24-hour period, more than the 202 added to the total on the morning of December 8, 2020.

The state is constantly updating the number of people who have died as a result of the virus, adding up the number of days when new data is reported to the IDPH. This can sometimes lead to major changes in the data, sometimes with a long delay of days or weeks. It was not immediately clear why the sudden jump occurred in the past 24 hours, although none of the reported deaths were attributed to the last three calendar days.

A further 645 people who tested positive for COVID-19 were reported in the past 24 hours, bringing the state’s total to 319,203 people as of March 2020.282,477 people are considered to have recovered from the disease.

A total of 358 people have been admitted to Iowa because of COVID-19, a net drop of 18 since Saturday morning’s report. 94 of those people are in intensive care, a net increase of 10. 29 of those patients require the use of a ventilator, a net decrease of two. 55 people were recently admitted to hospitals in Iowa for the disease in the past 24 hours, comparable to the 48 new patients in the previous reporting period.

Another 2,425 people had reported test results from public and private laboratories in the past 24 hours. The positivity rate for this series of tests was 26.6%, higher than the previous day’s 17.7%. The positivity rate calculated by this method may differ from the number on the state’s coronavirus dashboard, due to the fact that it uses the number of people tested, not the total number of tests including people who have been tested repeatedly.

A total of 1,472,768 people have been tested in Iowa since the start of the pandemic.

To date, a total of 248,832 doses of a vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered in Iowa. 132,466 people received only a first dose, while 58,183 received both doses required of the Moderna or Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine.
