Patrick Reed wins Farmers Insurance Open 5 shots a day after rules controversy

SAN DIEGO – Showing no effects from a rules controversy the day before, Patrick Reed withdrew for a five-shot win at the Farmers Insurance Open on Sunday.

Reed finished with a 4-under 68 at Torrey Pines, made an eagle in the par-5 sixth and finished his ninth PGA Tour title with a birdie on the 18th.

The former Masters champions finished at 14 under after a steady four days on the bluff-top municipal courses overlooking the Pacific. He shared the lead in the first round with Alex Noren, shot off the lead in a group in the second round and then shared the lead in the third round with Carlos Ortiz.

Controversy arose on the par-4 10th on Saturday when Reed hit a 190-yard shot from a bunker. A TV replay showed the ball bouncing once before settling in the rough. Without waiting for a referee, Reed picked up the ball to see if it was embedded. Reed told the official that no one in his group, like a volunteer in the neighborhood, saw it bounce. He got a free drop and a par saved in a round of 70.

On Sunday, Reed started his round with a 45-foot eagle putt at No. 6 to get down to 12 and followed with a birdie on the par-4 seventh. His only bogey was on the par-3 eighth, and he bounced back with a birdie on the par-5 ninth. He played the rest of the way until sinking an 8-foot birdie putt at number 18.

Tony Finau, Xander Schauffele, Ryan Palmer, Henrik Norlander and Viktor Hovland were tied for second place.

Hovland had been the closest in pursuit with four birdies on the top nine, including on the ninth to get under 12. But the birdies dried up and he bogeyed Nos. 14, 15 and 17 – he missed a 2-footer at 17 – in a 1-under 71 round.

Ortiz tripped badly with a lap of 6-over 78. He hurt himself with three bogeys on the front nine that even left him on the turn. He had even more trouble in ninth place where he bogeyed No. 11 and then struggled to get out of a greenside bunker at No. 12, taking a double bogey 6. He bogeyed 15, 16 and 18.
