Parents are responding to Michigan’s mask mandate that extends to children as young as 2 years old

Michigan has renewed a COVID-19 order that places restrictions on gatherings, dining, entertainment, and more.

The state’s Department of Health and Human Services has expanded mask requirements to include children 2-4 years old.

The order will run until May 24.

Dane and Tiffany Teal, the parents of the expectant 3-year-old Davis, said they are concerned that the state’s new rules could put parents in a difficult situation.

“Perhaps a lot of people don’t understand two-year-olds, especially our two-year-olds. He is a master negotiator. He can get what he wants and when he doesn’t wear a mask, he acts like a two-year-old, ”said Dane Teal.

‘Very likely they will take it off, drop it. It probably gets dirty when it lands on the floor and then they have to put it back on their face, ”said Tiffany Teal.

Dr. Rudolph Valentini knows it will be difficult to mask toddlers, but he believes the benefit outweighs the inconvenience.

The mask is a two-way street. It protects the person wearing it and the person on the other side of the mask, ”said Valentini.

The Teals said they’ll make the effort, but like many parents, they don’t have a problem with forgoing the white flag if it gets too bright.

‘I don’t expect him to keep it on all day. I’m not going to force it too much and upset him, ”Tiffany Teal said.
