Nydia Velázquez asks Treasury to cancel millionaire debt of burned Puerto Rican youth

Puerto Rican congressman Nydia Velázquez sent a letter today to Secretary of the Treasury Department, Janet Yellen, to defend young Puerto Rican Alexis Hernández, who sustained burns to almost his entire body in 2019 after an explosion in his apartment in Mexico. .

This after it was revealed that Hernández is facing a debt of more than $ 1.7 million that the federal government is charging him for hospital bills.

Velázquez summarized the young man’s case to the Federal Treasury Secretary, pointing out that it was a tragic situation and that the agency was “pursuing” him to pay the millionaire amount.

“Mr Hernández and his supporters have asked the Treasury Department to cancel his debt, a debt he cannot pay, but have received no response,” the representative said in her letter.

The congressman added that “after suffering such a tragedy, the Treasury Department should not burden him with a mountain of medical debts from which he cannot recover.”

Velázquez ended the letter by telling Yellen that he is asking the Treasury to consider Hernández’s appeal deeply, in accordance with the laws that apply to him.
