Miguel Romero announces the reopening of San Juan’s Central Park

The Mayor of San Juan, Miguel Romero, today, Sunday, partially reopened the facilities of the capital’s Central Park, the first of several recreational areas to open in the coming weeks.

“(The reopening) is a sub-question, first of all because there are some disciplines – at the level of the entire island – that we do not want to implement yet. We open the jogging pad and the track ‘Romero said during a press conference.

These two places will be public tomorrow, Monday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., according to the mayor.

“The idea is to get the most out of normalcy,” said Romero.

“For me it was certainly a necessity to reopen. People need outdoor recreation. This is healthier than being in a shopping center, ”he added.

The San Juan Natatorium and the tennis courts of the sports complex will remain closed, the mayor added, who announced that El Escambrón, the Rebekah Colberg sports center and the Luis Muñoz Marín Park will also reopen.

He emphasized that the reopening of the track and walking area requires maintenance of the green areas surrounding it, the bathrooms and signs with their own requirements or adapting to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, Romero said the park still does not have an energy service. He added that this issue will be addressed “little by little”. That is why the park is only used during the day.

Central Park has been closed since the coronavirus emergency was declared nearly a year ago.

Led by now-former mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz, the city council kept it closed for months, noting that the recreation and sports area had suffered serious damage to infrastructure and electrical lighting.

Cruz published a report indicating that the recent actions in the capital are testing his previous expressions. She was referring to the fact that the central government did not help her manage the capital.

“Something is being done, and that’s the most important thing,” Romero said when asked about Cruz’s statements.

During the press conference, Romero was joined by several users of the track who were very pleased with the reopening.
