Metro Health, WellMed to Reopen COVID-19 Vaccination Registration, Receives 9,000 Additional Doses Each

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District and WellMed have each received 9,000 additional doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Metro Health, which has received a shipment of the Pfizer vaccine, will begin booking appointments for the Alamodome next week.

To avoid the overwhelming crowds of residents seeking appointments that took place at the first set of Alamodome appointments, the City of San Antonio will be making appointments available on an ongoing basis.

The appointments on Friday are on Monday for approximately 2,000 slots. On Saturdays, the city makes 2,000 slots available for Tuesdays, and so on. The registration system will continue to reopen when appointments become available due to cancellations.

“With more frequent registration options, we hope to spread demand and give eligible residents more opportunities to book an appointment for the vaccine,” said assistant city manager Dr. Colleen Bridger. The vaccine is still scarce, so be patient. We expect vaccine stock to improve in the coming weeks. “

Appointments for the Alamodome can be made by going to covid19.sanantonio.gov/vaccine. Residents with internet access must use the website to register.

People without Internet access should call 311 and select option 8 to book an appointment. If you get a busy signal it means that all operators are answering other calls and callers will have to try again.

WellMed received 9,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine for distribution the following week. The additional doses are provided by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Beginning Saturday, January 16, those who qualify for a vaccine can call toll-free number 833-968-1745 to schedule an appointment daily from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm until all appointments are fulfilled.

You must make an appointment to receive the vaccine as walk-ins are not accepted.

When you call, you may have a hard time getting through as the phone lines are inundated with people trying to book an appointment.

According to WellMed, the hotline has received more than 7.9 million calls since January 9.

Callers are encouraged to keep calling back, and if the phone lines are congested, you will hear one of the following two messages:

  • A cell phone: “The line you are trying to reach is out of service.”

  • On a landline: “All circuits are occupied. Try again later. “

WellMed also states that if you are cut off after getting through the recorded greeting, it means that all operators are on a call.

Those now eligible to receive a vaccine are health professionals, anyone 65 and older, and adults 18 and older with chronic health conditions.

The clinics administering the vaccines are the Elvira Cisneros Senior Community Activity Center at 517 SW Military Drive and the Alicia Trevino Lopez Senior One-Stop Center at 8353 Culebra Road.
