Black Widow will be 100% the next movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That certainty is falteringhowever when you try to guess when it will actually be released.

After multiple delays because of covid-19, the Scarlet Johansson vehicle is currently scheduled for release on May 7And while Disney has put out major theatrical releases such as Soul, Mulan, and Raya and the last dragon on the Disney + streaming service, any indication is that Black Widow won’t that take that way. It will be a theatrical release.

Unless it isn’t.

In a new interview, Disney CEO Bob Chapek said the decision on how to release it Black Widow, and all of Disney’s other upcoming movies, are made at the ‘last minute’.

“Our situation and our circumstances are changing,” said Chapek CNBC (through Deadline“Just a few weeks ago, theaters in New York and Los Angeles weren’t even open. Now they are suddenly open, so we wait to see how potential theatergoers react to these reopenings. We remain flexible. We’ll probably be calling at the last minute about how these movies get to the market, be it now Black Widow or another title. “

Chapek is of course right that theaters are in the two biggest moviesto go markets have started to reopen, albeit with limited capacity. What Disney and other studios will be waiting for is to see if the audience actually returns to fill those theaters. Which will happen gradually, as covid-19 vaccines are still being distributed, but there is no way to predict a timeline.

When that happens, Widow and all other movies have a plethora of options. Disney can only release the films in theaters, only on Disney + (Soul did this, but it’s the least likely option), on both platforms simultaneously with Disney + Premier Access (like the studio did with Mulan and Raya or even reflects Paramount’s strategy, which is theatrical release only, with a very fast turnaround on streamingIf anything, that latter option sounds like the most plausible for Disney heading into summer.
