Leaders report 1,752 new COVID-19 cases, 20 new deaths

SAN ANTONIO – Mayor Ron Nirenberg of San Antonio and Justin Rodriguez, Commissioner of Bexar County, briefed the community on the local response to COVID-19 in their daily briefing Thursday evening.

Nirenberg reported 166,022 total COVID-19 cases and 2,027 total deaths in Bexar County, up from 1,752 new cases as of Thursday. Twenty new deaths have been reported today.

The 7-day moving average of cases is 1,459.

City officials also reported that 1,276 patients have been hospitalized, 397 in intensive care and 249 on ventilators. 10% of the manned beds are available and 49% of the fans.

There were 132 hospitalizations in the past 24 hours, Nirenberg said.

During the briefing, Rodriguez sent his condolences to the family of six-year-old county employee Roman Gonzalez, 59, who died of COVID-19. The commissioner said six workers have died from COVID-19 so far.

Nirenberg said mayors in Texas and in the US are pushing for more doses of the federal government’s COVID-19 vaccine. He said the state’s supply would soon arrive three weeks in advance, and the state would let the city know how many doses would be coming so the city can make arrangements in advance.

Nirenberg also said the Fiesta committee is meeting with health officials this week and leaders expect an announcement next week.
