Kyle Long says Bears’ starting QB will be a familiar face in 2021

So much for an exciting off season with a new starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears. It’s not going to happen, at least not according to former Bears offensive lineman Kyle Long.

Long on Wednesday gave this hot look at what’s likely to happen in the ever-haunting story of Chicago’s search for a quarterback.

“I don’t think they will be able to get what they want to do in the draft in the quarterback position,” Long said of the Bears. “I think we’re going to see Nick Foles with a full off-season behind us as a starting quarterback. Obviously I think Mitch is going elsewhere. “

Foles with a full off-season behind him don’t suddenly make him a good starting quarterback. It doesn’t even make him your average starting quarterback. It makes him the same quarterback he’s always been: a journeyman not good enough to hold on to a job for more than a season or two.

What Long doesn’t recognize in his Foles prediction is the urgency with which Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy are working. They can’t risk another season of Foles crumbling into the pocket like an un-athletic deck. They need a solution; a legitimate upgrade. And Pace will do whatever it takes to make it happen, even if it means paying too much for a player like Derek Carr in the trading market or rolling the dice on Jameis Winston in free agency.

At this point, both players would give the Bears a better chance of winning 10 or more games in 2021. And it will be a season like that before Pace and Nagy earn another year in Chicago.
