KAPALUA, Hawaii – Justin Thomas yesterday apologized for making a homophobic insult when he missed a putt at the Tournament of Champions.
“It’s inexcusable,” said Thomas of the barely audible, rude word he uttered as he attempted a five foot putt that could have given him par on the fourth hole on Saturday’s round. “First of all, I apologize, I am an adult, I am old and there is no reason for me to say anything like that.”
“It was awful. I’m so ashamed. I’m not like that. This doesn’t define who I am or what I do. Unfortunately I said so, I take responsibility and apologize.
The American noted that he was unaware that his reaction was captured by the broadcast, let alone become a topic on social networks, until after the round, which ended with a card of 68 strokes, five low torque , four strokes from the top.
The PGA Tour has issued a statement to address the issue.
As he said after his round, this comment from Justin was unacceptable, the agency said.
It seems plausible that the PGA will fine for unprofessional behavior. However, the tour does not usually disclose disciplinary action.
Thomas, who topped the rankings for a week last year, is the defending champion in Kapalua.
