Jurupa Valley man dies after violent arrest of Riverside County deputies on video

JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) – Disturbing video shows the Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies violently arresting a suspect who they believe was trying to grab a guard’s gun. The suspect later died in a hospital.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said that on Tuesday night, deputies responded to the 5500 block of Mission Boulevard in Jurupa Valley to investigate an attack with a deadly weapon.

Authorities say the suspect tried to grab a security guard’s gun during the incident at a supermarket. They allege the suspect, identified as 33-year-old Ernie Serrano from Jurupa Valley, fought with the guard and then deputies who tried to detain him, but Serrano refused to obey the deputies’ orders.

It can be seen on video that one of the deputies repeatedly hit the suspect with a baton. Another deputy sheriff then grabs Serrano to the ground.

“After Serrano was taken into custody, deputies noticed that he appeared to have stopped breathing. Medical personnel on the ground provided assistance and could receive a pulse,” the sheriff’s department said in a press release.

Serrano was transported to a local hospital, where authorities say his condition has deteriorated. He was later pronounced dead.

Serrano’s family disputes that he attempted to grab a weapon, saying they are heartbroken by his death.

There will be an autopsy on Monday.

Investigators from the Force Investigations Detail, Riverside County District Attorney Investigators and Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Central Homicide Unit have assumed the investigation is underway, the department said.
