Jimmy Kimmel returned from the holiday weekend on Tuesday evening to consider the surprisingly dramatic, if ultimately anti-climaxic, conclusion of Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial.
“Mitch McConnell was trying to get both ways this weekend,” the night host began. After voting for acquittal, McConnell gave a thrilling speech condemning Trump’s actions and inaction. In short, “Donald Trump is guilty of all the things I just didn’t find him guilty of.” ”
Instead of giving McConnell the triumphant video treatment, Kimmel broadcast audio of his scathing speech behind video of a turtle eating a leaf, before joking, “It was the turtle versus the crazy yellow hare.”
And since Trump “shouldn’t tweet” and “write letters now,” Kimmel read aloud from the seven-paragraph statement the former president released earlier today. “The Republican Party can never again be respected or strong with political ‘leaders’ like Senator Mitch McConnell at the helm,” Trump said, adding: stick with him, they won’t win anymore. “
