Hugh Jackman, who stars in the upcoming revival of “The Music Man” – produced by Scott Rudin – has finally spoken out about the infamous producer.
“I want to say how much respect and appreciation I have for the people who have spoken about their experience with Scott Rudin,” Jackman, 52, wrote in a statement in capital letters shared by New York Times theater reporter Michael Paulson.
“It takes a tremendous amount of courage and strength to stand up and declare your truth. This has sparked a long-overdue conversation, not just on Broadway and in the entertainment industry, but among all employees.
“The main voice we needed to hear was Scott Rudin, he has now spoken out and stepped away from ‘The Music Man’. I hope and pray this is a healing journey for all victims and the community, ”continued Jackman’s statement.
“We are currently rebuilding the ‘Music Man’ team and strive to create an environment that is not only safe, but ensures that everyone is seen, heard and appreciated. This is something that has always been very important to me, ”concluded the Tony winner.
Last week, the Hollywood Reporter released a damning report on Rudin, detailing numerous claims of workplace abuse, including smashing a computer console into the hand of one assistant and throwing a baked potato at another.
Days later, Rudin issued a statement apologizing for his alleged behavior.
“Much has been written about my history of troubling interactions with colleagues, and I deeply regret the pain my behavior caused to individuals, directly and indirectly,” said Rudin, whose film productions include Cormac McCarthy’s Oscar-winning adaptation. No Country for Old Men ”and eight of Wes Anderson’s films.
“After a period of reflection, I made the decision to withdraw from active participation in our Broadway productions with immediate effect,” he added.
