Coronavirus Pandemic: Los Angeles County Sees Increase in MIS-C Cases Even As COVID Hospital Admissions Decline

LOS ANGELES (KABC) – Amid a decline in coronavirus hospitalizations in Los Angeles County, health officials are turning their attention to the effects of COVID-19 on children.

As schools get closer to reopening for in-person instruction, there are now 100 cases of multi-system inflammatory syndrome, a serious coronavirus-related condition.

That number marks a 77% increase in MIS-C cases in the past month. Officials suspect it is related to a wave caused by holiday activities.

Austin Beutner, superintendent of Los Angeles’ Unified School District, said campuses could reopen April 9, depending on vaccine availability.

As of Monday, California will assign about 10% of the first doses of COVID-19 vaccines to teachers and support staff, officials said.
