Chief McManus says of shooting at church events that injured young boy, man

SAN ANTONIO – A shooting at a church event on the East Side has injured a 6-year-old boy and left another man in critical condition, according to San Antonio police.

The shooting took place on Sunday afternoon in the 1000 block of WW White and Martin Luther King Drive.

Chief McManus said there was an event going on at the Greater Faith Institutional Church when a 24/25-year-old man, his girlfriend and his son were in their car and pulled into the church parking lot.

That’s when a man hiding under a tree approached the vehicle, pulled a gun and opened fire, police said. The 6-year-old boy was shot in the shoulder, but is expected to be okay, McManus said.

The man in the vehicle, whose identity has not yet been released, was shot and seriously injured.

McManus said the shooting was aimed at the man in the vehicle and it was not an arbitrary act.

The department is still following leads to find the suspect, and McManus said he hopes to close the case sooner rather than later.

“All the violence in this town is across the border, but if you do it at a church event, it’s pretty much unheard of. We will stop at nothing to catch that person, ”said McManus. “This is inappropriate because of the madness that someone would be bold enough to do this, on a Sunday afternoon, at a church event.”

Information so far is preliminary and subject to change. This is a story in development and we will provide more details as they become available.
