Black Panther director Ryan Coogler to develop new Wakanda set series for Disney +

The Walt Disney Co. announced a five-year exclusive TV deal with “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler on Monday, which will include a Wakanda set series that will be streamed on Disney +.

“Ryan Coogler is an extraordinary storyteller whose vision and reach have made him one of the most outstanding filmmakers of his generation,” Disney Executive Chairman Bob Iger said in a statement. “With ‘Black Panther’, Ryan brought a groundbreaking story and iconic characters to life in a real, meaningful and memorable way, creating a cultural turning point. We are excited to strengthen our relationship and look forward to sharing more great stories with Ryan and his team. ”

Coogler is currently working on a follow-up movie “Black Panther” for Disney DIS,
+ 1.66%,
despite the death of star Chadwick Boseman last year. In addition to the Wakanda set series, Coogler’s production company, Proximity Media, will develop series for other Disney divisions as part of the five-year deal.

Wakanda, of course, is the fictional African kingdom where the superhero Black Panther resides. The 2018 film grossed $ 1.3 billion worldwide.

In December, Disney + announced an ambitious line of streaming series for the next several years, including at least 10 Marvel shows. It was unclear when the series of Wakanda sets will be allowed to debut.
