Plans for the first sustainable city on Mars revealed

With plans for the first “sustainable city on Mars” ready to go, it is now only a matter of time before humans live on Mars.

The new design includes a total of five cities – the capital is called Nüwa. The vertical city has residences, offices and green spaces, all built into the side of a cliff to protect residents from atmospheric pressure and radiation.

The oxygen is largely produced by plants, food is 90 percent vegetable and the energy comes from solar panels.

Life on Mars

Mars is half the size of Earth. But how would we get there? Every two years, there are a few weeks when the planet is closest to Earth, so the journey would only take six months to get there.

Conditions on the Red Planet, however, are far from friendly. The atmospheric pressure is not suitable for humans and the radiation is deadly on the surface without any shelter.

“We had to do a lot of computer-based analysis and work with the scientists to try to understand what conditions we will face,” said Alfredo Muñoz, founder of architecture studio ABIBOO, adding: very specific to the conditions at Mars, one of them is gravity, which is only a third of the gravity on Earth. “

On the other hand, CO2 and water can be obtained on the surface.

“Water is one of the great advantages that Mars offers, it helps to get the right materials for the construction. In short, with the water and the CO2 we can generate carbon and with the carbon we can generate steel.” Muñoz says. The architectural firm plans to use only materials from Mars for its construction.

The Mars city project is part of scientific work organized by The Mars Society and developed by the SONet network, an international team of scientists and academics. Architecture studio ABIBOO has made the designs based on the latest scientific research.

“The lessons we learn from developing a fully sustainable city on Mars bring us so much know-how, ideas and insights about things we could do differently on Earth,” says Muñoz.

When will humans live on Mars?

According to the architecture firm’s analysis, construction could begin in 2054 and could be built by 2100 – that is – when the first community could start living there, Muñoz explains.

“We think it can be done well from the technical aspects. [What takes time] is more about ensuring that there are enough wills and associations in the international community. This has to be something that comes from the private sector, the public sector, different locations, different cultures, to make sure there is diversity. “
