MAZATLÁN – Three team coaches Federals of Chiriquí, from Panama, suffered the theft of $ 560 from the team’s locker room at Teodoro Mariscal Stadium while facing the Caribbean of Anzoátegui, of Venezuela, in the first game of the Caribbean Series on Sunday-morning.
David Salayandía, president of the Professional Baseball League of Panama (Probeis), said ESPN Digital that a security camera captured an intruder, without ID, as he rummaged through team gear in the coaches’ room.
“We have a bittersweet taste, we have won, but we have also been through an uncomfortable situation,” said Salayandía, who is also a sports journalist in his country. “This should not happen, especially with all the security that such an important event must have, which is also happening in the midst of a pandemic,” he added.
“They’re monitoring the security cameras,” said Yasilka Córdoba, press officer for the Panamanian team, who gave the exact number of people stolen.
The coaches involved are Earl Anoly, who led the runners through first base, Darwin Marrero, who was in charge of the pitching, and Ashley Ponce, who led traffic through third base.
The Feds started their participation in the Caribbean Series with a 6-3 victory over Venezuela and will face the Caimanes of Barranquilla, Colombia on Monday at 11:00 AM (1:00 PM).
The Caribbean Series organizing committee informed the Panamanian delegation that it had placed the matter in the hands of the local police to try to identify the thief, who is apparently someone not authorized to walk through that area.
The second team to occupy the visiting dressing room on the first day of the series Creoles from Caguas, from Puerto Rico, the one opposite Aguilas Cibaeñas, from Dominican Republic.
