Leaders report 2,247 new COVID-19 cases, 17 new deaths

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg and Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff briefed the community on the local response to COVID-19 Friday evening in their daily briefing.

Nirenberg reported 157,835 total COVID-19 cases and 1,874 total deaths in Bexar County, up from 2,247 new cases as of Friday. Seventeen new deaths have been reported today.

The 7-day moving average of cases is 1,971.

City officials also reported that 1,393 patients have been hospitalized, 414 in intensive care and 252 on ventilators. 11% of the manned beds are available and 51% of the fans.

There were 181 hospitalizations in the past 24 hours, Nirenberg said.

Wolff said 41,000 COVID-19 vaccines were administered at the Wonderland Mall location. He said school district employees and University Health patients received their vaccines this week.

The district judge said the site should finish administering vaccines to school district workers by next week. The site will then continue to operate for those who qualify.

During the first week of February, the district hospital will be able to administer 3,000 doses per day for those who need a second dose, Wolff said. Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are available at the Wonderland location.

Wolff said that during the second and third weeks of February, the Wonderland site will re-administer the first doses to those who qualify.
