FDA Extends Recall for Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc.’s Sportmix Pet Foods after the death of 70 pets

NEW YORK – The FDA is expanding a dry pet food recall after more than 70 pets die and dozens more become ill.

The manufacturer of Sportmix pet foods first recalled a number of products last month after it was discovered that it may contain deadly levels of some type of fungus.

As of Monday, the FDA said it is aware of more than 70 pets who have died and more than 80 who became ill after eating Sportmix pet food.

The FDA says not all cases have been officially confirmed as aflatoxin poisoning by laboratory testing or veterinary registration.

But now the company is adding products containing corn to its recall list.

Some of the reported symptoms are fatigue, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice and diarrhea. In some cases, pets can suffer liver damage but show no other symptoms.

Pet owners should stop feeding the recalled products to their pets and consult their veterinarian, especially if their pet shows signs of illness.

Many of the following feed products have been recalled if the date / lot code contains an expiration date on or before “07/09/22” and “05” in the date / lot code, which identifies products made at the Oklahoma factory:
