If, like me, you’ve ever wanted an old Grand Prix machine but don’t have the money or motivation to maintain a classic car,en I have good news for you. A new Type 184 kit can run an old Mazda MX-5 Miata in an Alfa Romeo 158, a late 1930s car that won the first official Formula 1 race at Silverstone in 1950.

If you looked Ant Anstead’s MotorTrend show Wheeler dealersthen you might know what’s going on. This is Anstead’s latest project, and I have to admit, I’m a fan.

There are very few details about this kit on Anstead’s site (you need to make a deposit for more information), but in an interview with F1 Geeks, Anstead revealed that Tipo 184 will offer both a kit and a fully assembled car. That way, you can decide if you want to get dirty to make your own Alfa – or if you just want the experience of driving one.

And … there is one caveat. The kit contains everythingg you have to make the Alpha minus the Miata. You have to bring that with you to do it yourself – but that’s still a lot cheaper than buying an old Alfa. And since it is a kit car it is not a perfect replica.

The kit in all its glory.

The kit is advertisinged as £ 7,499, that’s $ 10,192 here in the United States. There is a limited edition of 10 sets of these starter packs, so if you want one, you’ll want to throw your name in the fight with a 75 or 50 percent deposit. If you are one of the first to buy, you will also get the chance to build the car in Tipo 184’s workshop—with Anstead’s helping hand.

If that doesn’t happen to you, don’t worry – the instructions are well organized in several separate “chapters” that guide you through one element of the car at a time. You can also buy those kits separately in 2021 so you can build and budget at your own pace.
