Yankees trade Adam Ottavino to Red Sox to save money

Adam Ottavino’s disappointing tenure with the Yankees is over – and he’s going to the Red Sox.

The right-handed was handed out to Boston on Monday, a source confirmed, with the Red Sox raising most of the $ 9 million owed to Ottavino, entering the final year of his $ 27 million three-year deal.

The Yankees wanted to move 35-year-old Ottavino to free up payroll as they want to stay below the $ 210 million luxury tax line this season.

Ottavino’s loss leaves the Yankees with Aroldis Chapman, Zack Britton and Chad Green at the back of the bullpen. It also leaves them with a new open spot on the 40-man roster after adding Jameson Taillon, Corey Kluber and DJ LeMahieu last week.

Ottavino was effective in his first season with the Yankees, finishing with an 1.90 ERA. But he struggled in September of that season and was horribly against the Astros in the ALCS.

And Ottavino had a tough 2020 season, having a 5.89 ERA in 24 appearances and was a non-factor in the playoffs, pitching only once and giving up a run in ⅔ of an inning in the loss of the Yankees’ Game 2 against the Rays in the ALDS.

“I want to stay in the team. I want to prove my worth. I want to pitch well, ”Ottavino told The Post’s Ken Davidoff in December.

“I want to finish what we have started in recent years and win that title and everything. It’s not up to me. So I don’t really pay attention to that. “
