Xbox x Nintendo announcement plagued by insiders

A new rumor suggests that Nintendo and Xbox will make an announcement later this year. The rumor was shared by Shpeshal Ed on Twitter, the co-founder of XboxEra.com. The poster pointed to an April 9 Game Mess video of Jeff Grubb. In the video, Grubb discusses a photo of Phil Spencer with many interesting items on the shelf in the background, including a Nintendo Switch. (that image can be seen here on ResetEra). In the video, Grubb says that “everything on Phil’s shelf meant something came in.” Readers should take that with a grain of salt, but it will be interesting to see if the two companies are indeed up to anything.

Microsoft has shown a significant amount of support for Switch in recent years. Microsoft has published games such as Ori and the blind forest and Minecraft on the Nintendo console, while characters like Banjo-Kazooie and Steve are playable in Super Smash Bros. UltimateAs a result of this relationship, there have been a number of rumors indicating that Xbox Game Pass could be coming to Switch. Microsoft has put a lot of support into the service, and if you got it on Switch, there would be a lot more potential subscribers coming.

There are many reasons why Game Pass would make sense for Microsoft on Switch, but it’s hard to say if Nintendo would see it as an advantage. It’s also worth noting that there are several games on Game Pass that may not be playable on Switch, so Microsoft should tailor a library specifically like for PC. A new Nintendo Switch model could help overcome that hurdle, but that’s also just a rumor at this point.

It is of course possible that this could be something completely different. Fans hoped more Microsoft characters would appear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, such as Master Chief and Doom Slayer. Nintendo fans are also passionate about Banjo-Kazooie; with the characters playable in Smash, maybe Nintendo and Microsoft are working together on a whole new game! For the time being, fans will have to temper their expectations.
