Xbox is unveiling special edition Xbox Series X controllers themed around the Mandalorian as sweepstakes prizes, to celebrate the show’s Season 2 finale.
Microsoft is partnering with Disney + to create new Xbox series X controllers inspired by the hit Star Wars TV program, The Mandalorian. This isn’t the first unlikely partnership that Xbox has entered into to promote its new console. Last month, fast food chain Bojangles unveiled a special console skin for the Xbox Series X, dressing the next-gen system as a box of Bojangles’ fried chicken. This bizarre crossover was won by a single lucky follower on Twitter.
If nothing else can be said about the launch of the new console generation, at least it has been eventful. Both the Series X and its competitor, the PlayStation 5, hit the market in November and sold out immediately. The COVID-19 pandemic is taking a heavy toll on console production and, in short, demand is hungry. Scalpers have used bots to dive into and retrieve hundreds of consoles before law-abiding customers have a chance to secure machines for themselves, and retailers just can’t keep up. Unfortunately, these unscrupulous resellers have been rewarded for their shady behavior; scalpers have made nearly $ 60 million in profits since the new consoles hit the shelves.

But these critical hurdles in the supply chain haven’t stopped Xbox from rewarding those lucky customers who have actually managed to get their hands on a new console. Today Xbox Wire (via Game Rant) announced a pair of special edition Xbox Series X controllers themed The Mandalorian. As the show tragically doesn’t have a video game adaptation, these controllers will instead be released to celebrate the show’s Season 2 finale premiere on December 18. One controller shows the child wielding the power, while the other shows the titular Mandalorian decked out in his iconic Beskar armor. The controllers are not available for retailers; fans will Xbox sweepstakes Twitter post to enter for a chance to win these exclusive accessories, shipped in a special Star Wars-themed mailer.
It may seem strange for Xbox to offer fans accessories themed after a TV show rather than a video game, but it makes sense in context. In November, Xbox re-partnered with Disney and now offers a 30-day free trial of Disney + to people who subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. This is a great way for dedicated Xbox fans to catch up on the hit Star Wars show in time for the premiere, and, if very lucky, in time for their new special edition controllers.
Cross promotion is nothing new in the video game industry. Microsoft especially loves them; in fact, the company has recently gotten into a bit of controversy for offering several snack-themed promotions for Halo infinite, although that game was quite delayed and won’t be released until next year. Some of these promotions make more sense than others, and some are certainly weirder than others. But fans of it The Mandalorian it would be difficult to tackle this special edition Xbox series X controllers.
