After multiple release date delays and a lot of hype among fans, Wonder Woman 1984 has officially arrived. The DC Comics-inspired movie made its debut on Christmas Day, and viewers could watch it in select theaters as well as on the HBO Max streaming service. For those who watched the film right away, there is no doubt a lot to see, as the nearly three-hour blockbuster contains many nods to the history of the Princess of the Amazons. While that was the case throughout the movie itself, it became abundantly clear in the film’s breathtaking mid-credit scene. Big spoilers for Wonder Woman 1984 Below! Only watch if you want to know!
Earlier in the film, Diana Prince / Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) explains the history of her Golden Eagle armor, which she hides in her base of operations in her Washington, DC apartment. As Diana explains to a newly resurrected Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), the armor was worn by the Amazons’ greatest champion – Asteria, a legendary warrior who was left in the world of man when Zeus created Themyscira.
Fast-forward to the mid-credits scene, where a brunette woman walks through a town square wearing a blue outfit. After a nearby pole breaks and nearly crushes civilians nearby, the woman immediately holds it up and saves the day – and turns to reveal her face. It’s Asteria, played by none other than legendary Wonder Woman actress Lynda Carter. Asteria introduces herself to one of the citizens and refers to her history, before noting that she has “been doing this for a long time”.
The moment is undoubtedly epic – namely because it pays homage to Carter’s original run as Wonder Woman, on the TV show of the same name that initially aired from 1975 to 1979 (which happened to be added to HBO Max earlier this week). It also makes Carter sacred within the modern DC Films universe, something that fans have been raving about for a long time.
‘I have spoken [director] Patty Jenkins. She spoke to me on the phone about the character and we tried to see if I could do anything with the [first Wonder Woman] movie, but it didn’t work out, ”said Carter in an interview with Variety in 2016. “The timing was wrong, and I did other things and couldn’t get to where they were shooting.”
And with an Amazon spin-off in the making, and Wonder Woman 3 As a possibility, there’s no telling exactly where we might see Asteria next.
