It was the highest grossing theatrical release of the pandemic after its debut on Christmas Day.

And it turns out that Warner Bros. To premiere Wonder Woman 1984 on the WarnerMedia subscription streaming service HBO Max at the same time as in movie theaters has paid off.

On Wednesday, parent company AT&T revealed that as a result, 17.7 million activated users had been added to HBO Max by the end of December.

That number was double the number it had at the end of September.

AT&T CEO John Stankey shared the news of the success during a fourth-quarter earnings call.

“The release of Wonder Woman 1984 helped pull our domestic HBO Max and HBO subscribers to over 41 million, a full two years ahead of our initial forecast,” said Stankey, as reported by THR.com.

Just two days after the film’s release, Warner Bros. said it would soon follow a third film in the franchise, with Gadot reprising her role as Diana Prince and Patty Jenkins as a writer and director.

Wonder Woman 1984’s success in both cinemas and streaming will bolster confidence in the company’s controversial decision to go ahead with a hybrid release of the full list of 2021 films.

The combined premiere of movies in theaters and on streaming seems likely to further increase activations.

“Activations” count the number of people who download (activate) the HBO Max app.

THR.com reports that the company aims to reach 50 million to 55 million HBO Max customers in the US by 2025.

WarnerMedia also plans to launch an ad-supported version of HBO Max in the second quarter of the year and roll out the streaming service internationally.
