Women accused of assaulting the US Postal Service postman in Flint

FLINT, Michigan (WJRT) – Federal and local investigations are underway after two women allegedly attacked a US Postal Service postman in Flint on Thursday.

The alleged attack took place on Floyd McCree Drive between the River Village and Schafer Square apartment complexes. Flint police are investigating in conjunction with the US Postal Inspection Service, the postal law enforcement agency.

A bystander made video of the attack on Thursday around 1.30 pm. It appears that his relative intervened to help the postman, while two other women held her and pulled her hair in the process.

One of the alleged attackers can be heard screaming, “She hit me first” on the video. Then the video shows the two women jumping back into their car and driving away. The man who filmed the attack took a look at the damage to the front of the mail truck before the footage ended.

“You know, you get a video and it’s always useful, but it never tells the full story because you never know when the video camera was turned on, what happened before, what happened after it was turned off. So there are still some unanswered questions, ”said Genesee County Attorney David Leyton.

Flint police have arrested at least one woman in connection with the incident. Leyton is waiting for answers to a few questions before deciding whether to prosecute the case.

He said the mail carrier involved in the incident was treated at and discharged from a regional hospital for budget cuts. She is expected to make a full recovery.

The postman was unable to complete her route, which is a major problem for the postal service. Their motto says that even severe weather does not stop their work.

Investigators are still investigating the damage to the mail truck.

‘We are trying to determine what happened and when. Which came first, the chicken or the egg – the crash or the attack – and why did it happen. And if there was a crash, how did it happen, ”said Leyton. “So all those things are still under investigation.”

Authorities are not clear about the relationship between the women accused of assaulting the postman.

The National Association of Letter Carriers, the postal services union, could not be reached for comment on Friday. The United States Postal Inspection Service released the following statement on Friday stating that the attack had nothing to do with stimulus checks:

“The safety and wellbeing of postal workers is a top priority for the US Postal Inspection Service, the federal law enforcement arm of the US Postal Service. Postal inspectors are aware of the incident involving an employee of the postal service. In incidents such as these, we work closely with our law enforcement partners and prosecutors, in this case the Flint Police Department, the Flint County District Attorney’s Office and the United States Attorney’s Office, to resolve these crimes and determine the best course of action for prosecution. There is no evidence that this incident is related to the disbursement of the economic impact payments. The investigation is ongoing. “
