Woman dies after being thrown from an SUV in a crash in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Highway Patrol officials say a woman died after being thrown from an SUV while it rolled over on I-15 Wednesday.

Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Nick Street said the driver of the Mercedes SUV had entered the far left lane on I-15 and was attempting to exit I-80 westbound. The driver lost control of the SUV and it rolled twice and came to a stop on the 500 South ramp to the western I-180.

The driver was thrown through the sunroof by the force of the roll and came to a stop about 30 feet from the raised ramp. The vehicle’s other occupants, a male passenger and two children, did not appear to be in critical condition but were taken to hospital, Street said.

The crash was initially considered fatal, but the driver showed “signs of life” and was reported to be in critical condition. Street said the woman was taken to hospital but then died of her injuries.

According to the Utah Department of Transportation, the ramp from I-15 north to I-80 west is currently closed, but estimated to open around 6:45 PM.

Further information, including the identity of those involved, has not been released.
