Google Photos introduces a new feature called Memories, which allows viewers to relive the moments of photos uploaded to the platform by converting them into 3D cinematic images.
According to a blog post, Google Photos uses machine learning to predict the depth of an image and produce a 3-D representation of the scene, even if the original image doesn’t contain depth information. That information is then animated using a “virtual camera” for a smooth zoom effect.
The result is reminiscent of the still-image animations seen in movies like The Watchmen:

While it’s clearly less detailed and without the extra movements, the result is still an enchanting way to appreciate your photo library. Google says Photos will automatically take cinematic photos for you as long as the app is updated. When one is ready, it will show in your Recent Highlights at the top of your photo grid.
In addition to the Cinematic photos, Google is rolling out new collage designs. AI is used to find photos of similar colors, and then chooses the background and font that go well with it. Finally, Memories also contains themes based on activities. The time periods that Memories includes can also be adjusted in your settings.
