Wisconsin residents need 10 digits to make local calls

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Residents of Wisconsin will have to dial 10 digits starting this fall to make local calls.

Right now, people in Wisconsin can call a number in the same area code without dialing the area code. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that starting Oct. 23, people will have to include the area code in all calls.

The change affects both landlines and cell phones in all six Wisconsin’s area codes, including 262, 414, 534, 608, 715, and 920.

Two dozen other states that haven’t switched to 10-digit dialing will also be affected.

The change comes as the Federal Communications Commission sets 988 as the new nationwide suicide prevention and mental health phone number.
