Winter storm warning issued for parts of NE Illinois, NW Indiana with heavy snow forecasts – NBC Chicago

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for parts of Illinois and Indiana, as heavy snow and chills are expected through Tuesday morning.

The warning will go into effect Sunday at 6 p.m. in Kankakee and the eastern Will Counties in Illinois, along with Lake, Porter, Newton and Jasper counties in northwest Indiana. The warning will remain in effect until 9am Tuesday.

All of Cook County will also fall under a winter storm warning that starts at 3 a.m. Monday and continues until 12 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the warning, frigid temperatures and occasional snow are in the forecast for Sunday evening, with the greatest threat of snow during Monday’s evening commute. About 4 to 8 inches of snow may be in the affected areas, and areas closer to Lake Michigan can see even more snow due to the enhancement of the lake’s effect.

Wind chills of up to 20 degrees below zero are also possible in affected provinces, with cold nighttime temperatures potentially affecting the effectiveness of salt and other road treatments, the warning said.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for Lake County, Illinois, along with Kane, DuPage, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy, and the northern and southern Will counties. The advice starts on Monday at 12:00 noon and runs until Tuesday at 9:00 am.

Outbreaks of snowfall are expected in the affected areas, with frigid wind chills also threatening those communities.
