Southern states are plagued by snow and sleet as they endure the coldest temperatures in years, decades and, in at least one case, even a century. Snow is accumulating in Texas and Oklahoma and is expected to get heavier later Sunday.

According to The Associated Press, government officials have been encouraging residents to stay at home during the weather, with Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas all deploying the National Guard to respond to the disaster.

Marc Chenard, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service (NWS), told the AP the Southern Plain states could see up to 12 inches of snow on Monday, noting that winter storms reach so far south.

All 254 counties in Texas received a winter storm warning from the NWS from Sunday afternoon as the state braces for persistent low temperatures, chills and precipitation from icy rain to snow at least the next day, the Texas Tribune reported.

President Biden approved a request for an emergency call to all Texas counties because of the results of the severe winter storm that has hit the state since Feb. 11. His approval to activate the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to respond to Texas came a day after Governor Greg Abbott (R) ‘s investigation.

“I thank President Biden for promptly issuing a federal emergency statement for Texas as we continue to respond to severe winter weather conditions across the state,” said Abbott, who issued a statewide disaster statement. on Friday, said in a press release.

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt (R) declared a state of emergency for all 77 counties last week in preparation for the storm.

In an update on Sundaythe governor said state and local authorities were “working around the clock to clear the roads as quickly as possible.”

Related emergencies are also stated in at least three other southern states: Louisiana, Kentucky and Mississippi.

The storm is already setting records for the region. The NWS in Houston issued its first wind chill warning in history on Sunday, which will remain in effect until Tuesday afternoon, while the NWS in Austin and San Antonio said it will experience its lowest temperatures since 1989.

Oklahoma City is expected to hit -11 degrees Tuesday morning, the lowest temperature in 116 years, according to The Washington Post.

The weather led to many flights being canceled, including hundreds at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, and multi-vehicle stacks in Texas and Oklahoma.

Electric Reliability Council of Texas, the state’s chief grid operator, warned in a release that it may have to implement an energy emergency alarm, which would lead to statewide outages due to “record-breaking electricity demand.”
