WandaVision showrunner Jac Schaeffer discussed the decision to kill Maria Rambeau in Disney + ‘first MCU series.
WandaVision is full of surprises, including the revelation that Lashana Lynch’s Maria Rambeau died of cancer in the five-year period between Snap to the end of Avengers: Infinity War and the Blip in Avengers: Endgame.
Series showrunner Jac Schaeffer discussed the decision to kill Maria Entertainment tonightand said that “it was a big decision. We had a lot of conversations and Maria and Lashana, the actor, were so important in Captain Marvel and such a great character. We didn’t make that decision lightly. But at the end of the day, Schaeffer and her team believed that killing Maria “really worked for Monica.” [Rambeau]’s character and what it meant to her. We also really liked the idea that Maria had built SWORD from the ground up. “

Maria Rambeau made her Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) debut in Captain Marvel. As Carol Danvers’ pilot and best friend, she helped Danvers remember her old life after the superhero returned to Earth six years after her apparent death in a plane crash. Her daughter, Monica Rambeau, also first appeared in that movie as a child, played by Akira Akbar. Teyonah Parris portrays an elderly Monica in WandaVision and will play the role again in the coming Captain Marvel 2.
WandaVision is the first of many Marvel TV projects to be released on Disney +. The next is The falcon and winter Soldier, which was set to launch in August, but was delayed to March due to the coronavirus pandemic. Other series in the works include Loki, Hawkeye, Mrs. Marvel, She-Hulk, Moon Knight and a series based on Black Panther‘s Wakanda. At the most recent Disney Investor Day presentation, the House of the Mouse also announced that projects are based on Secret Invasion, Ironheart and Armor Wars are under development, as well as a collection of shorts titled Baby Groot I am tall. Finally, the animated What if …? will premiere in the summer of 2021.
