Shameless fans shared many thoughts on the series’ final episode, including wishes Emmy RossumFiona’s character had appeared for the sake of closing. Unfortunately, it was not in the cards.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published Monday April 12, showrunner John Wells explained that Emmy, who left the Showtime series during the Season 9 finale that aired in March 2019, had hoped to return for the April 11 finale. But logistics didn’t work out during the pandemic, as the 34-year-old star lives in New York City while Shameless filmed in Los Angeles.
“We were trying to get to Emmy – and Emmy wanted to come back,” said John. “We noticed it at the wrong time. We wanted her to come back and had some storylines about her return, and she wanted to do it. New York and Los Angeles, and it was impossible to figure out how to get her back. ”
