‘Whiteout, Cruel Conditions’ on I-70, Closures in Colorado Mountains, Foothills and East – CBS Denver

(CBS4) Authorities are struggling to keep Interstate 70 open in the Colorado foothills during the major snowstorm that ravages the state on Sunday. At the end of Sunday morning, officials announced that things were also not going well on the Eastern Plains.

As of 1:45 AM, I-70 had weather-related closures in the following areas:

– East towards Silverthorne to Georgetown
– From Golden to Floyd Hill (on the border of Clear Creek County and Jefferson County)
– Airpark Road in Aurora all the way to Limon

Colorado State Patrol officials said in a tweet that conditions on Floyd Hill were “whiteout brutal conditions.”

Some out-of-state drivers have tried to get to Colorado ski resorts in the midst of a snowstorm. A family from Orlando, Florida, told CBS4 that they took a detour from I-70 and got stuck in the snow.

“We’re going to Breckenridge to ski. The girls had to use the toilet. We couldn’t save the hill with the two-wheel drive truck, so we reversed and he put it in the ditch, ”said one of the family members.

“What advice would you give other people if this was their first time driving in the snow?” Justin Adams from CBS4 asked.

“If you’re going to rent a car, make sure it’s four-wheel drive and not a two-wheeler,” he replied, laughing. “Other than that, hey, this is what it’s about.”

The family was able to borrow a tow rope and got going again. But they probably won’t soon forget their March ski trip to Colorado.

According to meteorologist Ashton Altieri, blizzard, winter storm and winter weather warnings remain in place for many areas of the state, with additional accumulation expected in all areas.
