White Sox designates Emilio Vargas

The White Sox have designated right-handed Emilio Vargas for assignment, James Fegan from The Athletic tweets. His place of 40 men goes to lefty Carlos Rodon, which has officially redrawn.

It wasn’t a long stay for the Chicago 40-man for Vargas, who the White Sox claimed exemptions from the Diamondbacks in the second half of November. Vargas joined the White Sox as someone without any Major League experience or a high-end prospect pedigree. Eric Longenhagen of FanGraphs wrote before 2020 that “Vargas is a Triple-A depth arm with a fastball of 40 based on velo and a fastball of 45 based on how he plays at the top of the zone.”

Vargas, who turned 24 in August, has so far topped the Double-A ball in the minors. He did a good job keeping runs off the board with 121 1/3 innings of 3.86 ERA ball and 100 strikeouts against 31 runs.
