Adm. Brett Giroir, the czar who is testing the White House coronavirus, expressed confidence that a new, more contagious strain of the vaccine detected in the UK is no more deadly than the more common strain.
“We don’t know whether it’s here or not, there’s certainly a possibility it’s here or not,” Giroir said on “Fox News Sunday.” “It’s no worse than the normal COVID stains. You can still protect yourself through the mitigating measures … we have no evidence to suggest nor do we believe the vaccine would be ineffective. “
Giroir added that “we would certainly encourage states to have quarantine orders or to have tests run as soon as these travelers arrive” from the UK, but noted that there are already existing protocols for travelers from the UK and continental Europe.
When asked whether public health officials expected an increase in infection as a result of the holidays, Giroir said, “It really depends on what the travelers do when they get where they are going.”
“We know that the actual physical act of traveling on airplanes, for example, can be quite safe,” he added. “What we’re really concerned about is the blending of bubbles once you get to your destination.”
