White Christmas Causes Headaches In Pittsburgh With Many Roads Still Under Snow – CBS Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – It may have been a White Christmas this year, but now it’s causing headaches in many Pittsburgh neighborhoods.

Many residents have reported that their streets are left untreated and untreated, creating dangerous driving and walking conditions.

Carrick is one such neighborhood, with Spokane Avenue right across from Carrick High School still covered.

Some of the residents of Carrick decided not to wait for the city and took the snow removal into their own hands by shoveling the streets after waiting for city plows and salt trucks.

“This is the whole neighborhood getting out and doing this,” said Peter Freeman, a resident of Carrick.

“It’s awful,” added Biff Austin. It’s never plowed and salted unless you call and complain about it. I think they forget it’s here. “

Austin has lived in Carrick for 12 years and feels like they are being overlooked after a winter storm.

“There was nothing tidy up this morning when I took my daughter to work,” he said, “18th street was covered, Brownsville Road.”

However, Carrick isn’t the only Pittsburgh ward to face these conditions.

There are also several unpaved or slippery roads in Overbrook.

The KDKA has received several phone calls and emails from viewers complaining about poor conditions in neighborhoods such as South Side, Lincoln Place and Hays.

Pittsburgh City Councilor Anthony Coghill, District 4 Representative, posted on Facebook this morning that his office has received more than 50 complaints about not plowing streets. He says the holiday is partly the cause of the slow start.

District 4 includes Brookline, Beechview, Bon Air, Carrick, Mr. Washington and Overbrook.

A representative from Mayor Bill Peduto’s office has said the crews will continue to work to clear streets and that Ministry of Works employees from other divisions will also come to help.

“It is starting to be a dangerous situation,” said Freeman. ‘I don’t know if I can get onto this street now. There is no one who has laid down salt. We pay taxes and this continues year after year. “

Carrick and Overbrook are not alone.

Brookline’s Berkshire Avenue was still quite covered in snow and ice when our teams were out on Saturday night.

The city has also said certain neighborhoods are also experiencing delays in waste collection and recycling, and says some neighborhoods that should collect waste today may not have it until Monday or Tuesday.

Not only did the covered roads cause a headache for residents, it also became a danger to drivers.

About 800 Duquesne Light customers were without power after a car accident knocked out a utility pole and associated wires on West Liberty Avenue.

According to Duquesne Light, the crews initially struggled to get to the scene due to the icy roads, but now they say the vast majority of customers should have restored their power.
