The “saints” are not marching in yet.
After being delayed over concerns about COVID-19, the highly anticipated “The Many Saints of Newark” will finally open on September 24, 2021 – nearly a year after its originally scheduled release date.
The prequel to ‘The Sopranos’, which is being produced by New Line Cinemas and released by Warner Bros., was set to hit theaters and streaming services in September 2020, Variety reported.
The mafia movie created by David Chase was later moved to this spring due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Billed as the original story of HBO’s iconic Mafia drama – which ran from 1999 to 2007 – ‘The Many Saints of Newark’ follows the DiMeo crime family as they compete with rival factions across the riot-ridden streets of Newark, New Jersey in the sixties.
The young Tony Soprano will be suitably played by Michael Gandolfini, the similar son of the late James Gandolfini, who played the adult soprano on the iconic HBO series. The actor, 21, revealed last year that he hadn’t even seen his dad’s legendary show until he was cast in the prequel.
The star-studded cast also includes Leslie Odom Jr. of “Hamilton” fame, Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Alessandro Nivola, Billy Magnussen, John Magaro, Michela De Rossi, Ray Liotta and Vera Farmiga.
“The Many Saints of Newark” will hit theaters and streaming service HBO Max simultaneously.
