Hey. Sorry. I accidentally sent you a 6-digit code by text message. Can you pass it on to me? It’s urgent ”.

It is a phishing technique that uses social engineering through identity theft, where attackers enter the phone number of the WhatsApp accounts they want to obtain and activate the verification process, which sends an SMS.

It’s worth noting that social engineering phishing identity theft is one of the oldest hacking techniques in computer security.

The attackers then pretend to be known to the victim, using a WhatsApp account that they have already violated and already have control over.

The latter does not make many people suspect that it is an attempt at social hacking and many people fall for it, as normal.

The same practice could be used to access other accounts, not just WhatsApp, as other services, including banks, use SMS verification, it’s relatively easy to access.

Fortunately, the very technique used to steal an account is what makes it so easy to get it back.

Since the application associates a person and their account with the phone number, we just need to restart the login process on our WhatsApp and ask them to resend the verification code via SMS, enter it and regain access.
