What’s next for Gary Sánchez in the Major Leagues in 2021?

The Dominican catcher comes off a difficult 2020 season, with the decision to place him in the postseason elicited different reactions.

A few seasons ago, it was easy to answer the question mentioned in this note. Gary Sanchez is a recipient who has yet to have a great career ahead of him, emerging as the big star of the New York Yankees

But something changed that perception in the hectic 2020. The Dominican catcher went from one of the most feared bats into a powerful line-up with Aaron Judge Y Giancarlo Stanton, hit .147 / .253 / .365 in 49 games last regular season.

Things got worse in the postseason when he had 8 at-bats in only 3 games and only homered in Game 2 of the series against the Cleveland Indians.

A season of oblivion ended. He tried to make it up a bit by playing winter baseball with the Toros del Este and in 15 games, he hit .245 with 13 hits in 53 at bats, four doubles and two home runs with 10 RBI’s.

But then came the question, one that even Gary couldn’t answer. The Dominican “didn’t know why he wasn’t playing”.

He expressed in an interview with Marly Rivera from ESPNIt was a very difficult time for him when he was benched in the postseason, even though he still feels fit to be an everyday catcher with the Bronx Mules to this day.

The Dominican must make sure that, despite never knowing what happened, the team trusts him again and can win the position, without doubting what could happen.

He’s got the talent, he’s got the bat and it wouldn’t be the first time a catcher has made up for a lack of attack, with very good defense behind the plate and that’s what he needs to improve.

Gerrit Cole has had a career 2.46 ERA in his career Robinson Chirinos, who just reached a deal with the Yankees. He has been invited for spring training and the contract is minor league.

But it shouldn’t be overlooked that if the Yankees see something they don’t like about Sanchez, another recipient, perhaps Chirinos, can take its place at any time. Their pulse did not flicker to keep the Dominican down in the late season. They will not tremble to do that in 2021.
