Netflix’s marketing department is excited to let you know that the streaming service is debuting at least one new film every week in 2021. This may be an attempt to infer the fact that while Warner Bros., Disney and NBC Universal, etc. All of them have their own streaming services (HBO Max, Disney +, Peacock), Netflix’s list of non-original content is getting thinner by the month.
So if it’s not recent blockbusters getting you in, what will you get for your February subscription fee? The biggest revenue of the month is Malcom and husbande (February 5), a vibrant film starring Zendaya (fresh off her Emmy win for Best Actress for HBO’s Euphoria) and John David Washington and written and directed by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson. Netflix paid north of $ 30 million for the film after it sparked off a bidding war in the wake of the (virtual) premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in 2020. Netflix hopes that the small-scale story of two actors returning home from their film’s premiere will be pending critical announcements. grabbing the attention of notoriously self-centered industry voters.
If you’re not in the mood for solipsist black and white navel gazing, there’s To All the Boys: Always and Forever (February 12), the third entry in the epic YA rom-com trilogy that began To all the guys I’ve loved before. The following week, Rosamund Pike and Dianne Wiest compete in the slick thriller about elder abuse I care a lot (February 19), the first time anyone has ever done a slick thriller about elder abuse.
Here’s everything else coming (and leaving) to Netflix in February 2021.
