What MI restaurant customers should know about new in-house dining guidelines

MID-MICHIGAN, Mich. (WJRT) – (1/31/21) – Michigan restaurants and bars will reopen next Monday for indoor dining. And there are some pandemic limitations that customers should be aware of.

State guidelines require restaurants to follow safety protocols, including wearing a mask, social distancing, and regular disinfection and cleaning.

Diners must also wear masks and are only allowed to remove them to eat or drink. The state said customers are limited to six people per table and no more than two households. Diners should also stay six feet away from those outside of their party.

Restaurants must collect names and phone numbers as part of the COVID-19 contact tracking protocol. They also need to keep the capacity at 25%. Tables should be two feet apart and ventilation systems should be working. Companies should also limit dining to seated use only.

The Michigan Department of Health & Human Services said that even with the requirements, indoor dining remains high risk. It encouraged people to take out, deliver or eat outside. It also suggested that families dine only with members of their household.

Michigan is now following the ‘MI COVID-19 Safer Dining’ program. To participate, restaurants must have a licensed HVAC contractor who inspects their ventilation systems and makes recommended changes as needed to improve circulation and further reduce the risk of COVID-19 spreading.
