Daniel Jones and Kenny Golladay have already made a connection.
Of course not on the field. That will come later. This was a salute as Jones reached out to his new target, Golladay, after the Giants signed the sky-high receiver on Saturday for a four-year deal worth $ 72 million.
“He just said how good a player he thought I was,” said Golladay. “I’ve said much the same about him. He also said that we are trying to do something wonderful here. That’s what I’m going for. ”
The Giants haven’t done anything great in Jones’s two seasons. Golladay could change that. At 1.80 meters, he could be the number 1 threat Jones missed, a legitimate weapon on the outside, capable of playing on the field and getting caught in traffic. Golladay’s power, coming out of the field, and Jones’ best feature, throwing it across the field, should make for a rewarding combination.
“I’m really excited to have Kenny,” said Jones. He has been a great playmaker in the league. When we spoke, he was interested in the culture we have in the building and the mindset of the team. I think he heard it from the coaches, but he wanted to hear how we saw it as players and how much we believed in it. I think it was important for him to find the right fit. ”
After four years of throwing the ball at him by the highly armed Matt Stafford with the Lions, Golladay, 27, now has a new quarterback to break into. Jones turns 24 next month and maybe Golladay can help with a ripening process in need of a huge step forward.
“First, he’s still a bit fresh in the league and I’d like to grow with him,” said Golladay. “I’m still growing as a player, and I feel like me and he can do some good things. We haven’t gotten onto the practice field yet, but me and he are both very excited. ”
Golladay has two 1,000-yard receiving seasons in his four NFL seasons, averaging 16.8 yards per catch. He said he liked what he heard about offensive coordinator Jason Garrett’s attack, but of course he doesn’t know many details about how he will be used in an attack that averaged just 17.5 points per match in 2020.
“Like me, this team gets a competitor, a guy who comes in, works, tries to push other guys and has fun,” said Golladay. “I want to have fun doing this, that’s what I do it for. Just a playmaker, you know? ”
Golladay smiled when asked if he believes he can have an immediate impact.
“We haven’t even stepped onto the practice field yet,” he said. “One thing I’m sure is, I’m going to go out and do everything I can to help this offense go away. When they need me, I’ll be there. to kind of make a play. ”
Soon the Giants will see for themselves what they have added to their offense.
“I can’t wait,” said Jones, “to get out on the field and work with him.”
